ARCADIA, CA — Queen of the Mud comes west for trainer Graham Motion seeking her first stakes win in Monday’s $80,000 Swingtime Stakes at Santa Anita.
The Swingtime, which is for fillies and mares at one mile on turf, is restricted to horses who have not won a stakes worth $60,000 at one mile or longer other than statebred. It is part of a special nine-race holiday card at The Great Race Place with first post at 1 p.m. PT. To help celebrate, on-track fans will receive $1 beers and sodas and $2 hot dogs.
Queen of the Mud comes in off three straight runner-up finishes in black-type stakes on the east coast, all turf sprints.
This will be her first time going around two. Bred in Ireland, the 4-year-old Kodiac filly most recently was second in the Sensible Lady Turf Dash at Laurel Park Sept. 14.
Previously, she was also second in both the Satin and Lace Stakes at Presque Isle Downs and the Goldwood Stakes at Monmouth Park.
Queen of the Mud has a record of 7: 2-3-1 with $158,119 in earnings for owners Siena Farm, The Elkstone Group, Peter Deutsch and Michael E. Kisber. She has lured the services of top rider Juan Hernandez for her local debut.
Among the leading local hopes is Gypsy Woman, a sharp allowance winner going a mile on turf at Santa Anita when making her second U.S. start Aug. 18. Trained by Mark Glatt, Gypsy Woman pressed the pace that day under Antonio Fresu and kicked clear to score by 1 ¼ lengths.
Bred in Ireland, where she made her first eight starts, Gypsy Woman is a 4-year-old filly by Cotai Glory. She is 10: 3-1-3 with $85,245 in earnings. Gypsy Woman, who is owned by Rancho Temescal Thoroughbred Partners, will be ridden by Abel Cedillo for the first time.
Royal Charter gets class relief for trainer Leonard Powell after finishing fifth, beaten 2 ¾ lengths, in the GII Mabee at Del Mar Sept. 7. Bred in England, where she made her first five starts, Royal Charter is a 4-year-old filly by Expert Eyes.
Prior to the Mabee, she won a first-level allowance at a mile on turf in April at Santa Anita and was second in a second-level allowance at 1 1/16 miles on turf Aug. 11 at Del Mar.
Overall, Royal Charter is 8: 3-2-0 with $82,025 in earnings. She is owned by Apple Tree Stud. Diego Herrera, who was aboard in the Mabee, rides Royal Charter.
